Ebbw Vale Railway

« Issues and Campaigns

The real problem is that trains have to pass each other between Cross Keys and Llanhilleth. At present this a single track section so you can only get one train an hour up to Ebbw Vale. And that train goes to Cardiff!

So if you wanted to run two trains an hour – one to Newport and one to Cardiff you would need to develop a passing loop. No sign of one yet.

Work on the Gaer Junction is due to be completed. This would potentially allow services to Newport operate, with 2 hourly services to Cardiff and Newport made possible. However, the Plaid Deputy Minister has said that they would have to replace services to Cardiff, and has hinted that he has no intention to downgrade the Cardiff service.

The Minister has openly refused to say how much improvements would cost, let alone when the service can be up and running. In 2008 it was said that the service would be up and running in time for the Ryder Cup! That time has now passed and no progress has been made.

Veronica German will be pressing the Minister to keep this badly needed service from Ebbw Vale to Newport as a priority.
