Veronica German AM congratulates Newport High School on results

South Wales East Assembly Member Veronica German has today hailed the innovative teaching methods that have allowed Newport High School to once again vastly improve on have its past GCSE results.

This year 75% of Newport High Year 11 students gained 5 A*-C GCSEs or equivalent. This is the best ever for the school and represents a 24% increase on the 2009 outcome. Only three years ago the pass rate was 29%. In Year 10, an amazing 49% of students have already gained 5 or more GCSEs at C grade or higher.

Veronica German AM, who visited the school only recently, commented:

“This is excellent news. Newport High’s innovative curriculum structure has led the school from strength to strength. Hopefully this can be an inspiration to other schools around Wales.

“Newport High offers a whole new way of raising the expectations of students and staff alike. A special mention must go to the Headteacher Gary Schlick who has done so much for the school. I have no doubt that new Headteacher Karyn Keane will successfully continue the great work that has been done.”

Schools in the Newport area have maintained their high performance in A Level examinations with results consistently above the Welsh averages. 98.1% of students achieved a pass grade, which is above the Welsh average of 97.1%

Mrs. German AM added:

“Congratulations to all students in Newport who achieved such excellent GCSE grades. These results can be a great stepping stone for their future.

“I also urge pupils who did not get the grades they were looking for to contact Careers Wales on 0800 100900 for free impartial advice and guidance.”
